Bicheno Beams is back – the perfect winter road trip

Winter in Tasmania doesn’t mean staying indoors. Rug up, hit the road, and head East for Bicheno Beams 2026. Every night from Saturday, June 27th to Saturday, July 25th, the small coastal town of Bicheno transform into something magical.

Bicheno Beams, the free, family-friendly laser light show that just took home Gold at the 2025 Tasmanian Tourism Awards is back for a 6th year.

If you’re looking for a reason to get out of town and explore Tasmania this winter, this is it. We couldn’t be more excited!

What Is Bicheno Beams?

Bicheno Beams is a community-run laser light show held nightly at Bicheno Lions Park on the East Coast of Tasmania. Powerful beams of light shoot into the night sky, perfectly synchronised to atmospheric, immersive music — and it only runs for 15 minutes, which somehow makes it feel more special.

There are two different shows that alternate each night, so if you stay for two evenings you’ll catch a completely different experience both times. Check in from 6:00pm and the show kicks off at 6:30pm sharp. And did we mention it’s completely free?

A free family-friendly celebration of light, Bicheno Beams is held annually in Winter.

Friendly local volunteers meet you at the Burgess Street entrance to Bicheno Lions Park (78 Burgess St) and guide you to the best viewing spots. Bring a camping chair if you have one – and perhaps a thermos of something hot. If it rains, the show goes on… and the lasers interacting with the raindrops are reportedly spectacular.

Beyond the beams, the community puts on lots of fun winter events: from food trucks to lantern making! Follow @bichenobeams on Instagram to keep across what’s on each night.

Getting there

Bicheno isn’t on a major transit route — this is very much a road trip destination. Honestly, that’s half the fun! The East Coast drive is one of the most scenic in Australia, and a hire car gives you the freedom to stop at beaches, viewpoints, and little towns along the way.

Here’s how far Bicheno is from our main locations:

Starting pointDistanceDrive time
Hobart Airport (HBA)~ 185 kmApprox. 2 hours 20 mins
Hobart City~ 178 kmApprox. 2 hours 15 mins
Launceston Airport (LST)~ 145 kmApprox. 1 hour 45 mins

From Hobart, the route takes you along the stunning Tasman Highway through Sorell and Triabunna before hugging the coastline toward the East Coast. From Launceston, you’ll head south through Campbell Town and over the scenic break at St Marys.

Either way, plan for a leisurely drive — there are plenty of reasons to pull over. Ready to book now?
