First in Tasmania for EV rentals

Drive Car Hire is proud to be the first rental company to offer electric vehicles (EVs) for hire in Tasmania.

Since 2021, we have offered Tesla Model 3s which make it possible to complete an emissions-free road trip around Tasmania. We invested in Long Range Dual Motor Model 3s, perfect for Tasmania’s world renowned touring routes, with sufficient range to comfortably complete a lap around Tasmania with use of public charging stations all across the state.

Teslas are available for rental in Hobart and Launceston, and for one-way rentals between the two.

In 2022 we added Standard Range Model Ys to our fleet, providing you with a choice of the best car to suit your needs.

What if I haven’t driven a Tesla or EV before?

If it is your first time driving a Tesla we have you covered! Our team will provide basic information for driving and using the Tesla prior to your arrival and we will walk you through the cars features and operations on your pickup at Hobart City. Our team is happy to look at your itinerary before you arrive and can assist with plans for your route and charging during your trip.

Do I need to charge the car before returning?

Your rental will commence with a battery level of at least 90%, ready for you to head out on the open road straight away. At Drive Car Hire, we require you to return the car with a minimum battery level of 20%. If the charge is below 20% there will be a recharging fee.

Are charging cables provided in the car?

We supply two charging cables in each of our EVs. If using public fast charging stations or charging is offered at your accommodation, you are unlikely to need to use the cables provided in the car, but they will be provided so that you have all available charging options at your fingertips:

  • A standard Australian PowerPoint to Tesla charger. This allows a slow charge option such as a top up charging overnight.
  • A Type 2 charging cable for use at Type 2 public charging points.

What is the range for the Model 3 and Y?

You can expect the following range (driving distance) from our electric cars:

Tesla Model 3 – Long Range (all wheel drive): 500kms +
Tesla Model Y – Standard Range (rear wheel drive): 400kms +

Our Long Range Model 3s are perfectly suited to touring all over Tasmania with comfortable range, even in remote areas of the state.

Can I return the car to a different location from the pick up point?

Yes. We allow one-way rentals between Hobart city, Hobart Airport, and Launceston Airport. Conditions apply.

Do you offer any other electric cars aside from Tesla?

The pick up was only about 100 metres from our Hotel in Hobart. Information about booking the car, the pre-checking system before pick up made life so easy. The gentleman at the desk was very clear and precise with his instructions and provided a map for our Airport drop off for 12 days later. The detailer answered all the questions about the Skoda we hired.

Easy to pick up and drop off at Hobart airport. Best deal I could find for a 3 week hire. The smallest of the MG's was nippy and easy to drive with good all round visibility. Definitely use these guys again provided they stay priced under the big boys.

I gave this rating because the car was easy to pick up at the airport and easy to drop off, we had no problems with the car, the car was economical, easy to drive ,very clean when we picked it up. The only thing as I spoke to Drive car rentals, renters should be advised that there is an emergency button which dials ooo inside the car for your assistance in an emergency

Drive Car Hire was an excellent experience. We hired a car for 2 weeks, and for the usual circuit of Tassie. The car was great. In good condition. Clean. Well suited to our needs. The actual hiring process was also seamless. All done electronically, from scanning drivers licenses to deposit payment (all before we got there. from Perth). Pick up was an automated process, as was drop off at the airport. We rate this car hire company highly. Thank you.
