November 2021: Tasmania’s EV Hire Era Begins
In November 2021, Drive Car Hire added Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD vehicles to our rental fleet, becoming the first car rental operator to offer electric cars for hire inTasmania. This milestone predated the expansion of major national and international rental brands into the EV space in the state, making us a pioneer.
Our timing was deliberate. Tasmania had just opened its state-wide Electric Highway fast-charging network in February 2021, enabling EVs with over 200km of range to travel nearly anywhere across the state. With public chargers now spaced approximately every 50 kilometres, infrastructure finally existed to make emissions-free road trips genuinely viable for tourists (and locals!).
2022: Fleet Expansion with the Tesla Model Y
In 2022, we expanded our EV offering by adding Standard Range Tesla Model Y vehicles, giving our customers the choice between two of Tesla’s most capable platforms. The Model 3 Long Range (500km+ range) would suit travellers planning full-island touring routes, while the Model Y Standard Range (400km+) was a spacious, family-friendly option.
Why Tasmania is the world’s best place to drive an EV
Tasmania generates 100% of our electricity from renewable energy sources, predominantly hydroelectricity and wind. This means that every kilometre driven in an EV in Tassie produces virtually zero net carbon emissions – a claim no petrol-powered vehicle can match anywhere.
Charging an EV in Tasmania is, by most measures, one of the greenest acts of travel available to tourists anywhere in Australia. This renewable energy advantage is unique. In most Australian states, EVs are partially charged from fossil fuel-generated electricity. In Tasmania, they run on clean hydro and wind power from the moment you plug in.

Tasmania’s charging network: no range anxiety
As of 2025-2026, Tasmania has one of Australia’s most comprehensive regional EV charging networks relative to its size:
Public fast chargers located approximately every 50 km across the state
Ultra-rapid chargers (350kW) operational in Launceston, Westbury, and other key locations
Charging available in Hobart, Launceston, the Huon Valley, the Tasman Peninsula, Bruny Island, and even as far as Smithton in the Northwest
Southernmost EV charging station in Australia is located in Southport, TAS
Tasmania’s ChargeSmart grants program has funded 14 chargers across the state plus 23 workplace and destination chargers
Visitors planning their routes can use PlugShare to find real-time charging options across the island.
We’re also happy to help with your pre-trip itinerary planning, give you an EV orientation, provide route advice, and consider one-way options between Hobart and Launceston – making it easy to do a linear touring route without having to backtrack.
